Vitamin C Serum Colour ?

What Colour should a Vitamin C Serum be?

Vitamin C serums should be clear to light yellow in colour. Vitamin C serums that contain the more potent form of Vitamin C called L-ascorbic acid will turn into darker shades of yellow and eventually brown as the product ages. This is a visual test that one can use to identify if a Vitamin C serum contains the more potent active form of L -ascorbic acid. Vitamin C serums that contain the less potent form of Vitamin C called Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate or Magnesium Ascorbyl Phospahate do not change colour over time. The change in colour of a Vitamin C serums from clear to yellow to brown occurs as Vitamin C is a highly active anti-oxidant that oxides as it is exposed to light and air.

Can I still use a Vitamin C Serum if it turns yellow?

Yes, you can use a vitamin c serum as it changes into darker shades of yellow however it must be noted that the efficacy of the product does decrease as it ages. A vitamin C serum that turns brown should be discarded. A vitamin C serum that does not change colour will not have any effects on your skin as it probably doesn’t have the potent form of Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid).

Our Vitamin CEF serum was designed exactly for this reason. It is manufactured and delivered within 30 days so that you get the highest concentration of active Vitamin C serum containing L-ascorbic acid. The first 30-60 days of using our product will provide you with one of the most effective vitamin c serums in South Africa. Our extremely short manufacturing and delivery time is made possible as we manufacture batches in an independent lab in small batch sizes. We also discard any stock that we have within 30-days of manufacture to ensure that our customers always get a serum that is highly active. This is the main reason why the larger cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies do not manufacture a Vitamin C serum that contains highly active L-ascorbic acid. It is also the reason for the high price of some Vitamin C serums on the market.

How to Prolong the Potency of a Vitamin C Serum?

Always ensure that your vitamin C serum is stored in an amber or dark bottle that blocks out UV light. In addition, ensure that you store your Vitamin C serum in a dark cool cupboard or fridge. When using your Vitamin C serum ensure that you close the bottle immediately after use to prevent further air from entering the product. The best practice is to dispense the product onto your face or palm and immediately close the bottle. It is also important to close the bottle as tight as possible.
